City of Columbia Strengthens Sustainability Efforts with Mattress Recycling

The Municipality of Columbia partnered with LRP Recycling to responsibly manage the removal and recycling of mattresses and box springs across multiple facilities. The project included 30 twin mattresses, 25 twin box springs, 50 full mattresses, 87 full box springs, 112 queen mattresses, 42 queen box springs, 60 king mattresses, and 100 king box springs, all recycled through LRP’s commercial recycling program.

This initiative demonstrates the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship, waste reduction, and the promotion of cleaner, greener community operations.

Environmental Impact:

  • 44,466 pounds of material diverted from landfills

  • 506,000 gallons of water conserved

  • 3,036 days of household energy preserved

  • 4,048 tanks of gas saved

By choosing to recycle instead of discard, the City of Columbia continues to set an example for municipalities nationwide in sustainability and responsible resource management.
