Fort Leonard Wood Strengthens Sustainability with Mattress Recycling

Fort Leonard Wood partnered with LRP Recycling to responsibly remove and recycle 280 twin mattresses as part of an ongoing facility improvement initiative. This project reflects the base’s commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and responsible resource management within U.S. military installations.

Through LRP Recycling’s specialized commercial recycling process, each mattress was dismantled and processed to recover valuable materials such as steel, foam, and fabric.

By diverting these materials from landfills, Fort Leonard Wood continues to support environmentally responsible practices while maintaining high standards for base operations.

Environmental Impact:

  • 15,120 pounds of material diverted from landfills

  • 140,000 gallons of water conserved

  • 840 days of household energy preserved

  • 1,120 tanks of gas saved

Projects like this demonstrate how military installations can lead by example in adopting sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact.
